Student & Graduates

Internship Program: Overview

SAE-A provides an opportunity to learn and work within the Society's National Office and with its affiliated partners. Internship opportunities are for engineering or business related projects and provide a pathway to being mentored by practicing senior engineers and given responsibility for specific projects to allow your personal brand to be developed and recognised.

Applicants are encouraged to apply with their own projects or are able to pick one provided by the Society.

Internship Program: Memorandum of Understanding

  • The Intern shall be a student or graduate member of the SAE-A.
  • The Intern will complete two projects through the internship, one being a technical project and the other a management or administration project. Both projects will be chosen through mutual agreement of the Intern and the SAE-A.
  • The SAE-A internship is a voluntary, there will be no remuneration, except for expenses for travel or project expenditure (not including travel to the SAE-A and return from the Intern’s residence). All expenses require approval by the project supervisor prior to commitment of the expense
  • The SAE-A will supervise and mentor the Intern through the projects, and provide a certificate of completion and reference for the Intern when the outcomes of the Internship have been completed. The certificate will be presented at either the SAE-A’s annual AGM dinner or MEEA, and short presentation of the technical project may also be required.
  • Each of the projects will be completed on the mutual agreement of the Intern and the Supervisor, and will be the subject of a technical paper. Furthermore, one of the projects will be chosen for entry to the SAE-A Mobility Engineering Excellence Awards (MEEA). The fee for entry and for attendance at the MEEA event will be paid for by the SAE-A.
  • The SAE-A will also request that one or both technical papers be disseminated at other forums, as appropriate to the topic. This may require up to four separate presentations of the topic.
  • The intern will have access to all training courses and events held by the SAE-A at no cost, with the exception of those courses which are facilitated externally.
  • The SAE-A will provide a desk, internet access, and computer (if required, we expect interns may prefer to use their own computers), and tea, coffee, water, etc. A project Supervisor will be appointed for each project. There is no minimum or maximum time for the Intern to be present at the SAE-A Head Office.
  • The Intern will not be expected to be involved in day to day operation of the SAE-A unless the Intern chooses to volunteer for assistance in running specific events in which other volunteers are present (eg. Formula SAE-A).
  • An MOU agreement will be signed by both parties on commencement of the internship, and can be cancelled at any time by either the SAE A or the Intern supplying the intention to cancel the agreement in writing.
  • The internship agreement will expire after 12 months, and this term is also proposed as a guide for completion of both projects. Extension of the agreement will be possible if supported by both the Intern and the SAE-A.
